Toyota To Launch An Electric MPV – Based on Upcoming Maruti YMC EV

Japanese automaker Toyota will introduce an electric SUV in the Indian market in 2025. This mid-sized electric SUV is based on the Urban SUV Concept, which is basically the re-badged version of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX. For people not in the know, MSIL will introduce the production version of the eVX in the country before the end of this year. A new media report claims that Toyota will also introduce an all-new electric MPV in the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki is also preparing an all-electric MPV, which is codenamed the YMC and is scheduled to launch in the Indian market by September 2026. The new Toyota electric MPV will also be based on the YMC electric MPV. The new skateboard platform is basically an affordable derivative of Toyota’s global 40PL architecture. This architecture will be used to develop multiple products for both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.

The Maruti Suzuki eVX is scheduled to make its debut sometime late 2024, while the price announcement is expected by March 2025. Toyota’s derivative based on the Urban SUV Concept is expected to arrive about 9-12 months after. The report claims that Maruti Suzuki believes that the YMC electric MPV will have a volume potential of over 50,000 units to 1 lakh units once it arrives in 2026. In fact, the company aims to achieve a production volume of 2.5 lakh units per annum for the eVX and YMC EV in the 2-3 years of market launch.

The new electric MPV is likely to share some design elements and powertrain components with the upcoming Toyota Urban SUV concept. The electric SUV is expected to offer two battery pack options – a 40kWh and a 60kWh – coupled with a front-axle mounted electric motor. The top-spec model is likely to deliver a range of up to 550km on a single charge.
