This shift has forced automakers to introduce their global products, which were earlier not suitable for the Indian market. Seeing surge in demand for such vehicles, India is set to get a slew of cars priced under Rs 20 lakh. If you are planning to upgrade to a new car, wait for these upcoming cars under 20 lakhs that will be launched in India in the next one year.

1.Maruti Jimny 5-Door

Maruti Suzuki will launch the long-awaited 5-door Jimny lifestyle SUV in the country in by May 2023. The SUV was unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo. It will rival the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha, which will also receive 5-door versions. The new model ride on longer wheelbase and the length has been increased to accommodate second-row seats. The larger dimensions will help Maruti Suzuki to create more space inside the cabin. It will be powered by a new 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with a Idle start-stop tech. Transmission choice will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor. It will get Suzuki’s AllGRIP PRO AWD system as standard.

2. Mahindra Thar 5-Door

Mahindra is all set to launch the new 5-door version of the Thar lifestyle SUV in 2023. To be based on longer wheelbase, the new Thar 5-door will be a 5-door model and will take on the upcoming Maruti Jimny and Force Gurkha. The new model will be based on the stiffer platform and will feature penta-link suspension. It will ride on longer wheelbase, which will allow Mahindra to create more space inside the cabin. The new Thar 5-door will be offered with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. Both engines will be tuned for higher power and torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

3. Maruti Fronx Crossover

Maruti Suzuki had showcased the new Fronx crossover at the 2023 Auto Expo. Based on the Baleno hatchback, the new crossover will be positioned against the likes of the Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite. It will be sold exclusively through NEXA dealership network. The crossover can be booked online or at authorised dealerships by paying a token amount of Rs 11,000. The new Maruti crossover will be powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox. It will also receive a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine with smart hybrid tech that powers the Baleno.

4. MG Small EV

MG Motor India will launch an entry-level electric vehicle in the country in early 2023. It will be based on Wuling’s Air EV that has recently been unveiled at an event in Indonesia. Codenamed E230, the new MG Air entry level EV is developed on the company’s Global Small Electric Vehicles platform that already underpins multiple products. It will be offered with the two-door body style. The small car will be modified and adapted for Indian conditions. The India-spec MG EV will ride on a 2,010mm wheelbase. The new model is reportedly to have a battery pack capacity of around 20kWh to 25kWh, which is likely to offer a real world driving range of 150km. The powertrain is expected to offer 40bhp of power.

5. Citroen C3 Aircross

Citroen will unveil the new C3 Aircross SUV in the country on April 27, 2023. The new model will be based on the CMP platform, which also underpins the C3 hatchback. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, VW Taigun & Skoda Kushaq. The SUV will also come in 7-seater version, which will rival the Kia Carens and the Suzuki XL6. The new Citroen C3 Aircross SUV is expected to be powered by the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 110bhp and a peak torque of 190Nm. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and an automatic unit.

6. New Honda Mid-Sized SUV

Japanese automaker, Honda is developing a new SUV to challenge the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor. The company has already released the teaser image of the upcoming SUV. The new model will be based on the modified Amaze platform and will share styling cues from the bigger Honda SUVs. It will measure around 4.3 meters in length and will share the features and engine specs with the City sedan. The new model is also likely to get e:HEV strong hybrid tech, which we have already seen on the City hybrid. It will also receive a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine with manual and CVT gearbox.
