Mahindra Thar 4×4 To Get A New Base Variant – Maruti Jimny Effect

Mahindra has recently introduced the new RWD variants of the Thar lifestyle SUV with a smaller capacity diesel engine. The SUV line-up is currently offered in two trim levels – AX(O) and LX – with two diesel and one petrol engine options. A new media report claims that Mahindra could launch a new entry-level 4×4 variant that will be positioned below the AX(O). This model will be offered in two engine options – a 2.2L diesel & a 2.0L turbo petrol.

The RWD variant of the Mahindra Thar is available in 3 variants – AX(O) Diesel, LX Diesel and LX Petrol AT – priced at Rs 9.99 lakh, Rs 11.49 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh respectively. The new entry-level 4WD variant – likely to be called AX AC – will be positioned below the AX (O) trim. This entry-level variant could miss out on some of the features available in the current model.

New Mahindra Thar Waiting Period

Mahindra had initially offered the entry-level AX trim, which was discontinued shortly. This variant was equipped with side-facing bench seats. The new AX AC trim will be a four-seater model with forward facing seats in the second-row. The launch of the new entry-level Thar 4×4 could be in response to Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Jimny SUV that is scheduled to be launched in May 2023. The Jimny will be priced lower than the Thar lifestyle SUV.

The Mahindra Thar engine options include a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, a 2.2-litre turbo diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo petrol. The smaller capacity diesel engine is capable of producing 118bhp and 300Nm of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The turbo petrol engine is good for 152bhp and 300Nm, while the turbo diesel engine produces 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. While the turbo diesel engine is offered in 4WD guise, the turbo petrol is offered with both 4WD and RWD configurations. The upcoming Mahindra Thar AX AC trim is expected to come with turbo petrol and diesel engines, and in MT 4X4 layout.
