Maruti Suzuki Jimny-Styled Electric SUV In The Works

Japanese automaker Suzuki has revealed its battery electric vehicle plans for the Indian market. The company’s first electric vehicle for the Indian market will be launched in FY2024. Suzuki has confirmed that it will introduce a total of 6 electric vehicles in our market by FY2030. Adding to it, the company reveals that it will have 60% ICE vehicles (CNG, biogas, ethanol mixed fuel), 25% hybrid electric vehicles and 15% battery electric vehicles in its portfolio by 2030.

Suzuki has also released a teaser image, which reveals the possible EV line-up for the Indian market. The teaser reveals that the company will introduce the Fronx EV and the WagonR EV in the country. Moreover, the Suzuki Jimny styled electric vehicle is also under development. However, Maruti’s first EV will be a mid-sized SUV to be launched sometime in 2024-25. It is reportedly to be based on Toyota’s 27PL platform, which is an affordable version of 40PL architecture.

The Suzuki Jimny electric is an interesting development. Not just Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors has also confirmed that the Sierra lifestyle SUV with electric powertrain will arrive in 2025. Moreover, Mahindra will also launch a wide range of new electric SUVs before the end of 2030. We expect that the Jimny EV will come with a dual-motor setup with a larger battery pack.

It was reported that Maruti Suzuki has shelved its plans to launch the WagonR EV, which has been spotted numerous times on the Indian roads. However, the latest teaser confirms that the WagonR Styled electric version is still under development and will be launched in our market. Moreover, MSIL could use the heavily modified HEARTECT platform as a base for the electric version of the Fronx.
