Mahindra XUV700 To Get Hybrid Powertrain; New Details

Homegrown UV maker, Mahindra has announced to introduce 9 new SUVs in the Indian market by 2026. The company will launch two brand new electric vehicles, codenamed Born EV1 and Born EV2 between 2025-26. What’s interesting is that Mahindra has announced that out of these 9 new SUVs, 6 models will have electrification technology.

The company is working on 4 new SUVs based on the monocoque platform. The long-awaited Mahindra XUV700 will be the first model to be based on the new monocoque architecture. The image released during the annual meet suggests that the XUV700 will come with an electric powertrain. However, it is not confirmed that the SUV will get the pure EV, mild-hybrid or a plug-in hybrid system.

Mahindra Funster concept

We believe that the new Mahindra XUV700 could get a mild hybrid system. The mild hybrid system will make the new model cleaner and more fuel efficient than the regular petrol & diesel engines. Moreover, this will make the new model compliant with the upcoming stringent CAFE 2 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norm. The new CAFE II norms will come into effect in 2022 and the BS6 Stage II norms are set to come into force beginning April 2023.

The Mahindra XUV700 will be offered with two engine options – a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The petrol engine is capable of producing around 188bp of power and 380Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel engine is likely to produce around 185bhp of power. These engines currently powers the second generation Thar, albeit in a lower state of tune. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

Mahindra Upcoming SUVs

The homegrown SUV maker also confirmed that the new gen Scorpio will arrive in the first half of 2022. The company has also announced the 5-door Thar, which will be launched by 2023. Adding to it, the next-gen Mahindra Bolero is also under development and will be launched between 2023-26. These SUVs will be based on the new ladder-on-frame chassis, which also underpins the new 3-door Thar.

The new XUV700 will be launched by October 2021. Adding to it, the company will introduce the next-gen XUV300, a new SUV codenamed V201 (likely to be the next-gen XUV500 5-seater) and W620 (likely to be the XUV900 SUV Coupe) between 2024-27. These SUVs will come with electrification technologies.
